BS4142 Noise Assessments and Reports

Industrial and Commercial Noise Assessments Backed by Chartered Mechanical Engineering Expertise

What Is a BS4142 Noise Assessment?

The BS4142:2014+A1:2019 noise assessment is the recognised UK standard for rating and assessing the impact of industrial and commercial sound on residential areas. We use BS4142 not only to assess the level of noise from mechanical equipment — such as generators, compressors, HVAC units and ASHPs — but also to design engineered solutions to mitigate the radiated sound at source or in transmission.

Why Is BS4142 Important for Planning?

  • Supports planning and retrospective applications

  • Meets Environmental Health Officer (EHO) requirements

  • Assists with compliance and complaint resolution

Noise Sources Typically Covered

  • Industrial machinery and manufacturing equipment

  • Mechanical and electrical plant (compressors, pumps, HVAC, ASHP)

  • Loading/unloading and logistics activities

  • Mobile plant such as forklifts and cranes

Our BS4142 Assessment Process

  1. Site consultation and noise survey

  2. Contextual analysis and BS4142 measurements

  3. Engineer-led diagnosis of noise and vibration sources

  4. Mitigation design and report delivery (typically within 5 working days)

The Mechanical Engineering Advantage

Unlike standard acoustic consultancies, we are a Chartered Mechanical Engineering practice. Our director, Paul Schmitz (MBA CEng MIMechE MIOA), has 29 years’ experience in vibration measurement, structural dynamics, and noise control. This expertise allows us to move beyond compliance reports — we provide engineered noise mitigation strategies such as:

  • Vibration isolation and system balancing

  • Acoustic enclosures and structural modifications

  • Redesign of mechanical & electrical (M&E) systems

Cost of BS4142 Assessments

Prices start from £1200 + VAT and include on-site survey, BS4142 report, and mitigation recommendations.

No two projects are the same — pricing depends on location, complexity, and machinery involved.

Case Studies

  • Generator noise control in logistics centres

  • Compressor isolation for manufacturing sites

  • HVAC and chiller noise assessments in retail developments

  • ASHP mitigation for residential planning compliance

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take? Site visits typically take half a day. Reports are delivered within 5 working days.

Do you provide installation of mitigation? Yes — we not only design but also implement the required vibration and noise control solutions.

Is BS4142 always appropriate? Not always. We will advise if another method (such as BS8233 or WHO guidance) is more suitable.
